SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK
Home to the Great Migration
SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK
Serengeti National Park, in northern Tanzania, is known for its massive annual migration of wildebeest and zebra. Seeking new pasture, the herds move north from their breeding grounds in the grassy southern plains. Many cross the marshy western corridor’s crocodile-infested Grumeti River. Others veer northeast to the Lobo Hills, home to black eagles. Black rhinos inhabit the granite outcrops of the Moru Kopjes.
The Serengeti is a sought-after destination for many visitors to East Africa and the Wildebeest Migration is a must-see event for any wildlife enthusiast. Whether you are a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, the Serengeti’s offering is so diverse that you’ll always discover something new – no matter how many times you’ve been on safari!
Many travelers choose a Serengeti safari to celebrate special occasions like honeymoons, engagements and birthdays. It is also a great safari destination to combine with a beach holiday on a tropical Indian Ocean island like nearby Zanzibar, Mauritius or the Seychelles.
If you want to pack as many wildlife experiences as possible into one trip, we have a comprehensive range of Serengeti safaris that cater to just about every traveler. Some focus purely on the Serengeti and its wildlife, while others include this world-famous national park as part of a larger itinerary. More affordable Serengeti safari holidays comprise scheduled departure tours that often include a few days in the adjacent Ngorongoro Crater or even Kenya’s Masai Mara.
TRAVEL TIPS
- Plan your timing carefully: If you want to see the Wildebeest Migration river crossings on your safari, make sure your itinerary matches the movement of the herds.
- Book early: well-located safari camps at the Wildebeest Migration’s hotspots get booked out early, often a year in advance.
- Choose your activities: morning and afternoon game drives are standard activities, and some lodges also offer hot-air balloon safaris. Activities like night game drives and guided bush walks are only permitted in certain areas.
- Expect other visitors in high season: many areas of the Serengeti are mostly quiet throughout the year, but the Wildebeest Migration’s highlights, like the Grumeti and Mara River crossings, attract lots of visitors from about May to August. Consider visiting during low or Green Season (about November to March) if you want to escape the crowds and still enjoy great game viewing plus see the Migration’s mega-herds.
